This afternoon tea we’d like to introduce today is not British-style, but Italian-style. The restaurant is called Prego (プレーゴ), and it’s located inside The Westin Kuala Lumpur (ウェスティン クアラルンプール). If you’re long-staying in Malaysia or on a business trip, be sure to check it out! Even if you’re traveling, if you have the time or the chance, we highly recommend paying a visit.

The chef is Marco De Cecco, a native of Italy. He has been working as an Italian cuisine chef in Singapore and will take on the role of head chef at Prego (Prego), located within The Westin Hotel in Bukit Bintang, starting this year. Since taking up the position, he has expanded the menu for both lunch and dinner, and now about 85% of the dishes are handmade. He enthusiastically shared that he aims to increase this to 95% handmade items in the future. This 95% handmade target includes pasta, cheese, bread, and more. After hearing various details about his approach, I was truly impressed by his dedication and attention to detail! I’m really looking forward to it. What kind of rare, exquisite dishes will he create? Now, let’s take a look at Prego’s afternoon tea offering. First, let’s get an overview of the entire selection.

Two servings of colorful finger foods and desserts are beautifully arranged on the afternoon tea stand. They look so exquisite that it’s almost a shame to eat them!

The dessert on the top row was delightfully not too sweet—so good I couldn’t help but ask for seconds!!!

A generous portion even for two! After enjoying authentic Italian home cooking and sipping on some tea, it’s time to hit the shops!
Prego (プレーゴ) is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s bustling downtown area, just across the road from the hugely popular Pavilion Mall. So convenient! Let’s now take a closer look at some of the delightful afternoon tea offerings.
“Bruschetta Fantasia” (Bruschetta):

According to Marco, bruschetta is a light snack from the regional cuisine of central or southern Italy. It’s often served as an appetizer or a bar snack. The classic combination features grilled bread topped with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and parsley. It’s a staple pairing in Italian cuisine, offering a refreshing and delicious taste.
“Cannoli Siciliani” (Cannoli):

Ricotta (a type of cheese) and Candied Fruits (a combination of sugar-coated fruits). Cannoli from Sicily (the southern island of Italy). Filled with cream cheese, they are not overly sweet and pair exceptionally well with nuts. A highly recommended treat.
“3-piece set on a separate plate”:

Olive, Calzone (カルツォーネ), and Puff Pastry (パイ, rectangular). Calzone is an Italian turnover—a triangular, double-sided baked pastry.
“Black Tea”:

Since it’s afternoon tea, tea is an absolute must.
“Filoncino” (フィロンチーノ):

Bread with smoked salmon, lemon, herb cream cheese, and capers (capers are the buds of a certain plant).
“Focaccia Rosmarino Sandwich”:

Focaccia is a flatbread from Italian cuisine. It’s loaded with tomatoes, cheese, and Turkish salami. Wow, this looks incredibly filling!
“Crostata di frutta” (Fruit Crostata):

Crostata is a very popular Italian dessert made with a cookie-like crust filled with jam and baked.

How does that sound? The items above are just a selection—there are even more! A total of 13 items! The flavors were delightful, the presentation was stylish, and I was thoroughly satisfied. I even had the chance to chat with Chef Marco De Cecco, making this afternoon tea an incredibly rewarding experience! Below is the detailed menu. (Please note that the menu is subject to change.)
“Menu & Prices”:

The price? Just RM98 for two (tax included) [August 2019, approx. ¥2,500]. This is a price only possible in Malaysia! While it’s often reported that the world’s cheapest hotel is located in Malaysia, I couldn’t help but think that the world’s cheapest afternoon tea might be here too!
Malaysia is a multi-ethnic nation, boasting a wide variety of cuisines from each community. From Malay, Chinese, and Indian dishes to the diverse culinary traditions of minority groups, the options are plentiful. There is also a rich selection of international cuisines, including Middle Eastern, Thai, other Southeast Asian, Japanese, and Korean foods. Although Italian cuisine—which many Japanese visitors love—is still relatively scarce, we highly recommend trying an Italian-style afternoon tea!
